For the first time in eight years Franklin has a new mayor. Jack Horton was sworn into office at the Town Council meeting on Monday, Dec. 6 after running unopposed in the November election.
Macon County Schools’ full-time and part-time employees will receive a bonus each December beginning this year through 2024. The bonuses are funded from the Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief (ESSER) Fund as part of the American Rescue Plan.

Macon County Schools has received its final Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief [ESSER] Fund allocation, and the results should mean a merrier Christmas for the school system’s employees. Macon County Schools received $3.4 million from its last installment of the ESSER III Fund.

Sen. Kevin Corbin announced Monday morning he would not make a bid for U.S. Congress and will file to run for re-election serving State Senate District 50. In the recent redistricting of the state, Macon County became part of a new 14th U.S. Congressional district.

Macon gets $3.3 million in state budget

For the first time since 2018, the state Senate, House of Representatives and governor have come to an agreement on a budget. Gov. Roy Cooper signed the $25.9 million budget on Nov. 18. The governor has vetoed previous budgets each year since taking office in 2017.
