Franklin’s Town Council brought up a lot of concerns during their strategic planning meeting and the board members are determined to do something about them. One concern that every town official shares is litter.

Horton to serve as vice-mayor

Franklin’s Town Council hasn’t appointed a new member to replace Barbara McRae – and it’s possible that they won’t, given the municipal election that’s supposed to be held in a few more months – but they took steps to make up for her loss during their meeting on Monday night.

Governor loosens COVID-19 restrictions

Governor Roy Cooper ordered last week for capacity regulations related to preventing the spread of COVID-19 to be relaxed effective on Friday, March 26. Executive Order No. 204 allows some businesses including museums, retailers and salons to operate at 100% of their occupancy limits.

LBJ Job Corps to upgrade internet

The Lyndon B. Johnson Job Corps should have much better Internet access by next month, and if it works out, the rest of the county could follow suit. Most of Macon County suffers from poor Internet connectivity due to a lack of infrastructure.

K-8 virtual option to remain in 2022

Macon County Schools will continue to offer interested students in grades K-8 an all-virtual learning experience in the 2021-22 school year regardless of how COVID-19 restrictions pan out over the next few months.

On Sunday, March 21, Western Carolina University and Vecinos partnered to vaccinate 100 farmworkers in Western North Carolina against the COVID-19 virus.

Whitmire property: Ideas, no plans

The Franklin Town Council held their annual strategic planning meeting earlier this month, and just like in years past, the Whitmire Property was the star of the show. The town purchased the Whitmire Property  in 2004 for $1.575 million and it has gone unused ever since.
