Wreck on Highlands Road

A driver was ejected from his vehicle in a collision at 4:22 p.m. Monday on the Highlands Road. According the N.C. Highway Patrol, a 2006 Ford truck driven by Phillip Wheaton, 56, of Franklin, was traveling north and struck a GEO Tracker as it was pulling out of the Community BP at 4088 Highlands Road. The Tracker flipped, crossed the shoulder, and landed against a gas pump and another vehicle that was stopped at the pumps. Shayne Boatright said he got out of his car to pump gas when he noticed a car coming toward him and jumped out of the way before it struck his car. The driver of the Tracker, Larry Estes, 84, of Franklin, was airlifted to Mission. Wheaton had minor injuries and left by private vehicle. The incident is still under investigation and no charges have been filed at this time, according to the N.C. Highway Patrol.
