Animal control updates presented to Board of Commissioners

The issue of animal control and the care of animals has been a topic of several Board of Health meetings over the past year.
In June 2021 a committee was appointed to review the county’s animal control ordinance and make recommendations for changes.

With rising food costs, more families may be having a hard time putting food on the table. Bethel United Methodist Church has opened a food pantry to help those with food insecurity.
When the pandemic first started in 2020, the church installed a free pantry in the parking lot.

MMS principal suspended

Macon Middle School principal Kevin Bailey has been suspended with pay, according to a representative from the Macon County School District.
While the reason for the suspension remains confidential, the district confirmed it is not due to any illegal activity or anything involving a student.

Council approves annexation request

The Franklin Town Council approved on April 4 the annexation of the property at 3011 Georgia Road, occupied by the Fast Food Mart. Owner Eva Sue Norton had submitted on Feb. 16 an application for voluntary annexation.

Unemployment rate up statewide

Unemployment rates (not seasonally adjusted) increased in all 100 of North Carolina’s counties in January, according to a report from the North Carolina Department of Commerce.
Macon County had a workforce of 15,005 in January with 507 people unemployed (3.4%). That was an increase over the 2.

When Robby Greenberg moved to Macon County last spring, she brought with her a love of folk music that she wants to share with the community.
She is organizing a monthly concert series at the Holly Springs Community Building. The first concert will be Saturday, April 9 featuring Tret Fure.

Town Council members look at the site leased to Root+Barrel to expand outdoor dining.

The Franklin Town Council’s unanimous approval of a lease for Root + Barrel was met with applause at the April 4 meeting. The restaurant owners requested to use the space between Town Hall and the restaurant to provide more outdoor dining.

Economic indicator report shows growth in 2021

The Economic Development Commission reviewed the 2021 Economic Indicator Report at its meeting on March 10. Most categories show steady growth with some numbers even surpassing pre-pandemic levels.
“Recovery from the pandemic has been stronger than expected,” said EDC Director Tommy Jenkins.
