Three Republican candidates are vying for the Clerk of Superior Court position. The winner of the May 17 primary will face Democratic challenger Dinah Mashburn in the November general election.

Macon denied lottery funds for FHS project

Christopher Lugo editor@highlandsnews.com The Macon County School district was part of the 48 other school districts that were rejected from $400 million worth of grants provided by the North Carolina Education Lottery. This year, 76 districts applied for help with needs totaling $2.7 billion.

Town Council divided over tax increase

The Franklin Town Council will move forward with a proposed 2022-2023 budget that includes a three-cent property tax increase, an increase in water rates and a possible increase in the fire district tax. The council voted 3-2 on the proposed budget during a work session Monday evening.

Early voting ends May 14

One-stop voting for the primary election winds down this week with the last day to vote early being Saturday, May 14. One-stop voting is available at the Macon County Community Building in Franklin and the Highlands Civic Center. The sites are open 7:30 a.m. – 7:30 p.m.
