Ribbon cutting for new hospital

The parking lot at the new Angel Medical Center located at 124 One Center Court, Franklin, was full on Tuesday morning as the hospital hosted public tours of the facility.

Getting connected in Otto and Scaly Mountain

Residents in Otto and Scaly Mountain now have access to free WiFi at their community centers. “This is something we’ve been working on for a while,” said Jeff Lee, president/CEO of Little T Broadband.

GREAT grant will expand broadband in Macon County

Macon County was one of 69 counties to receive a GREAT grant to expand broadband service. Frontier Communications of the Carolinas will receive the $3,769,602.95 grant to connect 2,622 households and 78 businesses to high-speed internet.

Town votes to begin recreation development on Whitmire property

The Franklin Town Council met in a called session on Aug. 30 to discuss the future of the Whitmire property, also known as Sunnyside Park. The town bought the 12.71-acre property in 2004 for $1.57 million and has no debt on the property. In 2008, the property was appraised at $2.1 million.

A waterline break early Monday morning left residents and businesses in East Franklin without water for several hours. The break occurred on Lakeside Drive between Hardee’s and Dollar General. Shortly after 2 p.m.

Town hires new code enforcement officer

After nearly a year-long search, the Town of Franklin has hired a code enforcement officer. The Town Council approved adding the position during budget discussions in May 2021 and approved the job description in October.

Helping homeless veterans

The coming week will offer the opportunity to help those in our community who once served our country but now find themselves without a home. The Men’s Group at First Presbyterian Church has been raising money to help homeless veterans since 2014.

Back to School

Summer vacation is over and Macon County students headed back to the classroom on Monday. As expected, there were a few things to work through on the first day of school, but Superintendent Chris Baldwin said the new school year got off to a good start.

Get your entries ready for the county fair

The 4-H kids are tending to their animals and practicing their show skills. Gardeners are cultivating their prettiest blooms or largest pumpkin. School children are drawing, coloring and creating all manners of arts and crafts. Folks are in their kitchens pickling and canning.
