Help ‘Feed the Need’

With the holiday season quickly approaching, people are starting to think about ways to prepare. One of these ways is thorough food. CareNet is a local food pantry that helps people in Macon County.

New pickleball courts location approved

It’s not Christmas yet, but local pickleball players are getting something on their wish list – eight new courts. Parks and Recreation Director Seth Adams came before the Board of Commissioners on Nov. 8 to present a plan to build new pickleball courts at the Macon County Recreation Park.

Election canvass completed

The Macon County Board of Elections met on Friday, Nov. 18 for the canvass of the General Election. Canvass is the process of officially tallying votes for the election, to account for every ballot cast and to ensure that every valid vote cast is included in the election totals.

There are many reasons to be thankful for the place we call home. During the Thanksgiving holiday, there is no shortage of opportunities to give back to your neighbor. These local causes are celebrating the season of giving by helping fill the hearts and bellies of those who may need it most.

Laseter, Breeden elected to Board of Education

Voters elected two new members to the Board of Education in the 2022 General Election. Stephanie Hyder Laseter won the District 2 seat. Diedre Kay Breeden was the top vote getter in the District 4 race, beating incumbent Carol Arnold.

Shields, Shearl, Antoine elected to county board

With the swearing in of new elected officials next month, the five-member Macon County Board of Commissioners will be fully Republican. Republicans John Shearl, Gary Shields and Danny Antoine were the top vote getters in the races for District 1 and District 2 in the November General Election.

Election ushers in new county leaders

Macon County had a turnout of 56.47% in the General Election. Prior to Election Day on Nov. 8, 9,672 people had voted early or with absentee by mail ballots. The total number of ballots cast in the election was 15,793.

Tate offers advice to future commissioners

Jim Tate, chairman of Macon County Board Commissioners, said goodbye during the regular board meeting on Nov. 8. Tate has served as chairman of the board for the past eight years of his 11-year tenure. He opted not to run for re-election.

World War II veteran honored

Heavy rainfall from Hurricane Nicole may have cancelled the annual Veterans Day parade in downtown Franklin, but it didn’t put a damper on the celebration. The community gathered at the Franklin High School Fine Arts Center last Friday to honor local service members.
