Election simulation set for Jan. 25

The Macon County Board of Elections will conduct a simulated election with new equipment during the last full week of January. Elections Director Melanie Thibault told the Board of Commissioners the work will start Monday, Jan. 23, and the actual simulation starts 9 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan.

Student art adds color to MMS

For the first time in nearly a decade, students at Macon Middle School are back in the art room. When the program was cut in 2012, fellow educators and community supporters formed “ARTS for MCS,” a movement dedicated to the preservation of visual and fine arts education.

Winter arrives

An arctic front moved through Macon County over Christmas weekend bringing single-digit temperatures and wind chills below zero. High winds and falling trees brought down power lines. Friday morning, Duke Energy reported 2,823 customers in Macon County without power.

County approves Nantahala plans

After what Nantahala residents feel like was too long without action, on Dec. 13, the Macon County Board of Commissioners unanimously approved going forward with quarter-million-dollar renovations to the Nantahala Library/Community Center.

County to reopen landfill sections

The county is aiming to temporarily reopen two full landfill sections and vertically expand the cell currently in use, giving the solid waste department time pay off debt and build a new cell.

Students deliver Christmas cheer

Franklin High and Macon Middle students brought cheer and presents to the residents of Macon Citizens Habilities on Wednesday, Dec. 14. “It is one of our most exciting days of the year,” said MCH Director Christi Huff.

Town Council discusses ordinance amendments

The Dec. 5 Franklin Town Council meeting included discussions on several topics including the old hospital property, campaign signs and skateboarding in town. Town Manager Amie Owens gave an update on the feasibility study being conducted at the old Angel Medical Center on Riverview Street.
