Construction issues force school board to ask for more money

An emergency meeting of the Macon County Board of Education on Friday morning resulted in the board approving two resolutions to ask county commissioners for an extra $945,000 for school construction projects.

Water Quality Committee to make report to County Commissioners

Ahead of the possible votes on changes to land management and floodplains in Macon County, a group works to convince the county commissioners to halt the changes. The Water Quality Advisory Committee was formed in the last couple of weeks, first meeting the week of Aug. 19.

Absentee ballots to be mailed out Sept. 6

Absentee ballots will be mailed starting this Friday, Sept. 6, for the 2024 General Election, and North Carolina’s ballot will include seven presidential candidates. Any North Carolina registered voter may request, receive and vote a mail-in absentee ballot where absentee voting is permitted.

60-unit apartment complex approved for Franklin

Solstice Partners LLC has been approved to build a 60-unit low-income apartment complex in Franklin. Solstice Partners was one of three developers who had presented apartment complex plans to the Franklin Town Council and Franklin Planning Board earlier this year.

Town of Franklin wants DOT to make Main Street a priority

The condition of Main Street was a topic of conversation during the Street Department’s report at the August Franklin Town Council meeting. Mayor Jack Horton said someone had recently asked him when the town was going to pave Main Street.

A total of 4,461 Macon County students headed back to school on Monday, Aug. 26 for the first day of the 2024-25 school year. Superintendent Josh Lynch, who is visiting all 11 schools this year, described the first day as “phenomenal” and “fantastic.
