FHS construction gets underway

Drivers on Wayah Street will soon spot something at the Franklin High School football stadium: a new chain-link fence with a windscreen. And it’ll be there for the next two years.

Local housing market ‘out of whack’

A recent housing study confirmed what many families already know: affordable housing is scarce in Macon County. The study was conducted by Bowen National Research through a Dogwood Health Grant that the county’s housing department received.

While stressing they were not advocating one way or another, the Macon County Commissioners unanimously voted on Nov. 12 to have the county Planning Board research the possibility and effects of removing the Lake Emory Dam.

County approves new regional library agreement

Over 18 months after starting the process of revising its agreement with Fontana Regional Library, the Macon County Board of Commissioners quickly and without comment approved a new agreement with minimal changes at its Nov. 12 meeting.

Provisional, absentee ballots added to election totals

By approving 112 of the 211 provisional ballots and 45 absentee ballots during canvass on Friday, Nov. 15, the Macon County Board of Elections signed off on the 2024 election.

Presenters advise against floodplain change

Being two members short of a quorum, the Macon County Planning Board couldn’t officially hold a meeting as scheduled on Thursday, Nov. 7, but did listen to 90 minutes of public comment and presentations from those who showed up and one of their members.

Sales tax hike narrowly defeated, Breedlove keeps school board seat

In the closest Macon County contest of the night, a referendum to raise the local sales tax by a quarter of a cent looks to have failed by 487 votes. Not counting the roughly 60 provisional ballots left, 10,213 votes (51.22%) were cast “Against” the referendum compared to 9,726 “For” votes, or 48.
