Town Council discusses ordinance amendments

The Dec. 5 Franklin Town Council meeting included discussions on several topics including the old hospital property, campaign signs and skateboarding in town. Town Manager Amie Owens gave an update on the feasibility study being conducted at the old Angel Medical Center on Riverview Street.

Housing main topic of meeting about old hospital

Whether it’s senior housing, a commercial kitchen, a mental hospital, affordable housing or some combination of those or other ideas, town and county officials are highly interested in figuring out the future for the old Angel Medical Center.

Holland hired as school security coordinator

The former Macon County sheriff was the only one interviewed for a school safety and security coordinator position approved by Macon County Schools on Dec. 5. Robert L. Holland, who retired as sheriff the end of November, will start as MCS safety and security coordinator on Jan. 3, 2023.

Teachers receive supplemental pay

Macon County School employees will be seeing a post-holiday supplemental payout after a discussion and approval by the Macon County Board of Education at Monday’s meeting. MCS will use $756,516 in state supplemental funds to pay each MCS employee $1,472 in January.

New pickleball courts location approved

It’s not Christmas yet, but local pickleball players are getting something on their wish list – eight new courts. Parks and Recreation Director Seth Adams came before the Board of Commissioners on Nov. 8 to present a plan to build new pickleball courts at the Macon County Recreation Park.

Election canvass completed

The Macon County Board of Elections met on Friday, Nov. 18 for the canvass of the General Election. Canvass is the process of officially tallying votes for the election, to account for every ballot cast and to ensure that every valid vote cast is included in the election totals.

Election ushers in new county leaders

Macon County had a turnout of 56.47% in the General Election. Prior to Election Day on Nov. 8, 9,672 people had voted early or with absentee by mail ballots. The total number of ballots cast in the election was 15,793.
