Learning Loss: Schools work on COVID recovery

Macon County students are making gains in the learning loss that occurred due to the COVID pandemic and the resulting school closings and online learning. Associate Superintendent Josh Lynch reviewed information from the state school report card at the Oct. 24 Board of Education meeting.

County sees high early voting turnout

More than 5,000 people have voted in the November General Election since early voting started on Oct. 20. As of the Monday evening, 5,935 people had voted (including 487 vote-by-mail ballots), according to the Macon County Board of Elections.

FHS plans to be submitted for state review

Following a joint meeting of the Board of Commissioners and the Board of Education last week, the schematic designs for a new Franklin High School and stadium will be submitted to local and state review agencies.

Woman dies in house fire

An 88-year-old Franklin woman died in a house fire early Monday morning. Cowee Fire/Rescue was dispatched to a fire at 391 Bradley Creek Road at 12:38 a.m. The person calling 911 said an elderly woman was trapped inside. The structure was fully engulfed when the first crew arrived at 12:44 a.m.

Holland named Franklin police chief

Franklin Police Department’s longtime employee Devin Holland will be the town’s next chief of police effective Dec. 1, according to Town Manager Amie Owens. Holland currently serves as captain of patrol for the Town of Franklin.

Franklin woman charged with double homicide

A Franklin woman has been charged with two counts of second-degree murder in connection with the discovery of two bodies in a home on Mack Branch Road on Oct. 10. Divinity Aleza Guest, 22, is charged with the murders of her mother, Levia Lee Guest, 42, and her friend, Brandon John Thomas Ownby, 31.

Debris ignites fire at landfill

Firefighters were called out last Tuesday, Oct 4, when a tractor-trailer caught fire in a building at the landfill. The first call came into the 911 center at 7:48 p.m. from a caller on the Greenway reporting she could see smoke and heard an explosion.

Lambert named student teacher of the year
