Flooding, snowfall cause headaches across county

Flooding after several days of rain, followed by a surprise snowfall caused plenty of problems for Macon County residents, but no injuries were reported

“We actually fared really well,” said Warren Cabe, director of Macon County Emergency Services.

Heavy, extended rainfall triggered flooding in numerous areas of the county on Thursday, Feb. 6. Emergency crews helped two residents get out of a home on Robbins Road in Cowee.

“The residents were moved from a house because of high water,” Cabe said. “There was no structural damage, just high water.”

“The issues we had last Thursday were in the usual low-lying areas that are prone to flooding,” Cabe added.

Saturday’s unexpected snowfall, which brought 4-5 inches of snow to parts of the county, caused a rash of traffic accidents.

“We had an abundance of accidents on Saturday with the snowfall,” Cabe said. “It caught some people by surprise.

Calls entered the emergency services CAD system from Feb. 6-9 involved at least 15 wrecks, numerous cases of stranded motorists and a few reports of downed trees and power lines.
