The new Food Lion grocery store is slated to open today, April 28 in Macon Plaza on Highlands Road. Store manager Kristy McGuire said the company converted the store from Bi-Lo to Food Lion in a period of 10 days. “There will be a lot more variety throughout the store,” said McGuire, who worked for Bi-Lo for 26 years. The new store will include an improved produce section, a bakery and flowers. McGuire said about 95% of the Bi-Lo employees who wanted to continue working were rehired for Food Lion. The store is still accepting applications for positions in most departments. Store hours will be 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. seven days a week. “I am excited for the new store and our community,” said McGuire. Due to COVID, a grand opening celebration is not planned. “But we welcome everyone to come check us out,” she said. (Right) Workers change the sign at the entrance to Macon Plaza.
