A Franklin man is in jail charged with voluntary manslaughter following the March 13 shooting death of a woman at a home on Oak Hill Road.
Robert Massung Jr. is in the Macon County Detention Center under a $200,000 bond, accused in the shooting death of Kathleen Dills, 47, of Franklin.
Deputies with the Macon County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene of a shooting at 290 Oak Hill Road at about 2:37 p.m. Friday, March 13, according to sheriff Robert Holland.
In the house, deputies found Dills suffering from a gunshot wound. Deputies administered first aid but she died at the scene.
Massung, of 164 Oak Hill Road, was charged with felony voluntary manslaughter. Another man at the scene was not charged.
Massung had suspected someone had been breaking into a vacant home in his neighborhood and went to the home to investigate with another neighbor, Holland said. He allegedly entered the vacant home without permission from the owner and fired a 9 mm handgun, hitting Dills at least once, Holland said.
Another woman inside the home immediately fled the residence and drove away in a blue Ford Mustang. She was later found and said she had been at the home with the victim and confirmed that the victim was her sister.
Neither of the women was armed, Holland said.
Detectives contacted other members of the family to notify them of her death.
“Right now it’s still under investigation,” Holland said. “We’re continuing to do interviews and following up on some information.”
Deputies were assisted by the N.C. State Bureau Investigation. An autopsy was scheduled to be performed in Winston-Salem on Monday, March 16.
