Early, one-stop voting ends at 3 p.m. Saturday ahead of primary election day on Tuesday, March 3.

As of Tuesday morning, Feb. 25, a total of 1,888 voters had cast ballots during the early voting period. In 2016, a total of 3,572 ballots were cast in early voting.

“I think we’re running a little low,” said Gary Tallent, deputy director of the Macon County Board of Elections. “The state told us that statewide voting was down, too.”

Early voting continues this week, from 8 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. through Friday and from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 29, the last day for early voting.

“It looks like the weather is going to be OK,” Tallent said. “We were worried about that, but it should not be an issue.”

Voters must go to their polling location on Election Day, based on their physical address, in order to cast a ballot. Anyone who is unsure of where to vote can call the Board of Elections Office at 828-349-2034.

Macon County has 15 polling locations for the March 3 election. All will be open from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Voters will be asked to provide their name, address and party affiliation. If properly registered to vote, they will be given the appropriate ballot and directed to the voting booth to mark the ballot and then place the ballot into the voting machine.

No voter ID is required, and there will be no voting at the Macon County Courthouse on Election Day
