One of Franklin’s all-time greats will be immortalized this fall. At the school’s Athletic Awards Ceremony May 22, former baseball catcher and current head coach Jared Greenwood received the department’s most prestigious honor, learning that his #9 jersey will be retired. A key member of Franklin’s 2001 State Champion team, Greenwood set five school records and earned two All-State nods as a player, before extending his career with the USC Gamecocks, WCU Catamounts and New York Yankees. As a coach Greenwood has formed the program in his own image, taking over a three-win team in 2021 and guiding them to state playoff berths in three of the past four years. At Panther football’s game with Tuscola at WCU Oct. 3, Greenwood’s jersey will become just the sixth in school history to be retired, after Walter Scruggs, Shawn Bryson, Lindsay Simpson, Jeremiah Young and Penny Thompson Moffitt. “You should have told me – I would have made a big, long speech,” joked Greenwood to attendees upon learning the news. “Thank you … I love Franklin, and this is a true honor. I really appreciate it.”
