A shutout loss at home ended Macon Middle School’s football season.

The Panthers finished 1-7.

“It was a growing year for the players and the coaches,” said Cody Viar, who was in his first season as the team’s head coach.

“I am proud of all the kids on the team. They have shown good character and grew tremendously. Our record does not reflect the type of team we were and that is OK.”

MMS lost 20-0 to Flat Rock in the season finale, played Oct. 17. The Panthers had only five possessions – two of which ended with lost fumbles.

Both teams had finished last in their division of the Blue Ridge Athletic Conference. It was the first win of the year for Flat Rock.

The Panthers’ lone win came in the third game of the season. They beat Madison 16-10 at home.

“We have gotten the 12 eighth-graders ready for the next level,” Viar said. “The seventh-graders have a year of the new offense under their belts and we are looking to bring experience back next year.”

Viar thanked his assistant coaches for everything they did this season. Joining him on staff were Bobby Kuppers, Daniel Pickens, Landon Potter and Zach Tallent.

“I am nothing without them and I owe everything to them,” Viar said.

“To all the parents and fans, I am truly grateful for the support. I am still proud to be a Panther and love this organization.
