MCT holding steady, preparing for the future

Macon County Transit is still rolling out services for residents, and the director sees change on the horizon. MCT was founded in 1999 as the Departments of Social Services and Senior Services realized their buses were going to the same places at the same time.

Main Street historic district gets approval

The Town of Franklin has received a long-awaited approval that could spur improvements along Main Street. The N.C. Historic Preservation Office approved Franklin’s request for historic district designation on Feb. 13.

County sees low turnout in primary early voting

Voters’ final chances to cast their ballots are coming up as early voting ends Saturday and the Primary Election is Tuesday, March 3.  Early voting in Macon County has been underway since Feb. 12, and will continue through Saturday, Feb. 28.

Franklin TDA promotes experiences, mountain life

Franklin visitors are looking for experiences in the mountains. During the Feb. 9 Franklin Town Council meeting, Stewart Communications presented a report on marketing efforts for the Franklin Tourism Development Authority.

County in a good place at mid-year

Macon County is in a good place so far in the 2025-26 budget, according to County Manager Warren Cabe as of the Feb. 10 Board of Commissioners meeting.  Cabe presented the information as part of a mid-year budget review as the county prepares for budget season.

Community speaks out on redistricting

Thirteen speakers showed up for the Macon County Board of Commissioners meeting on Feb. 10 to voice opposition to a proposed new election structure for the board.  Commissioners have been discussing redistricting since their Dec. 9 meeting, reigniting an effort from 2023 to restructure the board.

Town receives funding for water treatment plant

Congressman Chuck Edwards stopped by Franklin Town Hall on Saturday morning to present a $4,320,000 check to the town.  The funds will be used to help cover the cost of a new clear well and two pump replacements at the town’s water treatment plant.
