FRANKLIN - Winona “Nonie” (Kerr) Cowie, beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, passed away into the arms of her Lord and Savior on Sept. 2, 2022, surrounded by family. Born in Pennsylvania, Nonie moved to Florida in the 1930s, where she met and married Tom Cowie. They were married for 65 years and had two daughters, Carol and Susan. Tom and Nonie lived in Miami for over 60 years; upon retirement they moved to Franklin where they lived for 34 years.

After moving to Franklin, she taught homebound children and volunteered at her beloved church, First United Methodist of Franklin. She loved her family deeply and prayed for them and her friends every day. She was a prayer warrior! She enjoyed sewing, gardening, crafts, canning with Tom, entertaining and always caring for others – with a smile on her face. Her laugh was contagious, and boy did she love to laugh. She loved being called “Mimi” by all her grandchildren.

She moved back to Miami in 2015 after her stroke, where she lived with her granddaughter Karen and her husband Jon Hegler. There she was cared for with love and devotion for seven plus years.

Our family would like to thank and acknowledge her devoted caregivers, Joyce Popham and Jeannie Vilato. She learned to do jigsaw puzzles and spent hours doing those. She loved reading, and taught herself to write with her left hand; she spent many days writing and sending cards (so many cards) – still thinking of others. She learned to read on a Kindle and an iPad.

This past May Nonie celebrated her 100th birthday with all her family. Nonie was best known for her deep Christian faith, love of her Lord and her family and friends. She will always be remembered for her loving generous spirit that touched so many lives through her kindness.  She was a true example of love.

Nonie was preceded in death by her beloved husband Tom. She is survived by her daughters, Carol (Ken) Allen, Susan (Rene) de Miranda; grandchildren, Karen (Jon) Hegler, Kelly (Allen) Lewis, Dedra de Miranda (partner Chelsea), Carrie (Eddy) Barros, Michael (Jeanette) de Miranda; great-grandchildren, Ashley (Zac) Hegler Autio, Joseph Wassell, Tommy Divers, Taliah de Miranda, Terry (Janice) Lewis; and great-great-grandsons, Aiden and Austin Lewis.

Per Nonie’s request there will be no service.

Her wishes were for donations in her memory to the First United Methodist Church of Franklin (firstumcfranklin.org) or to “Branches” 129 SW 5th Avenue, Florida City, FL 33034 (branchesfl.org)
