OTTO – Rufus “R.M.” Miles Hunter Jr., 76, went home to be with his Lord on Sunday, Dec. 27, 2020.

A native of Screven County, Georgia, he was the son of the late Rufus Miles Hunter Sr. and Lina Waters Hunter. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Keith Griffis, who died in January of 2020. 

Mr. Hunter retired from CSX Railroad and served in the Marine Corp Reserves. “R.M.” was very active and a member at South Macon Baptist Church. He spent countless hours alongside his wife Betsy on fund raising for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, a cause that was extremely personal to him.

Mr. Hunter is survived by his wife of 27 years, Betsy Punzel Hunter; children, Rufus “Rusty” Miles Hunter III (Virginia) of Savannah, Nikki Parris (Scot) of Atlanta and Jeff Griffis of Chattanooga, Tennessee. He also is survived by a daughter-in-law, Missy Griffis of Springfield, Georgia; sister, Patricia Becton of Augusta, Georgia; and a brother, Jimmy Hunter (Ruth) of Newport News, Virginia; grandchildren, Taylor, Ethan, Emma, Abby, Gwyn, Anna, Nick, Taylor M., Jessica, Branden, Logan, Melissa and Sunshine. Six great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 2, 2021 at South Macon Baptist Church. The Rev. Albert Grey officiated. The family received friends from 1-2 p.m., one hour prior to the service at the church.

Burial will be in the Screven County Memorial Park in Sylvania, Georgia on Saturday, Jan. 9, 2021.
