FRANKLIN - John “Leonard” Halman Sr. of Jacksonville, Florida, passed away Dec. 3, 2021, at the age of 91. He was born April 6, 1930, in Mason City, Iowa to Frank E. & Eva Stephens Halman.

Leonard lived in the Jacksonville area most of his life attending John Gorrie Junior High and Andrew Jackson High School. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War. Leonard joined the Duval County Road Patrol in 1964, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office in 1968 and retired in 1986, moving to Franklin to enjoy the mountain life. He loved family gatherings, fish fries, oyster roasts, and antique cars and trucks. He was an avid fan of the Florida Gators, Green Bay Packers and St. Louis Cardinals baseball teams. Leonard was a member of Fruit Cove Baptist Church, the Fraternal Order of Police, and the National Association of Retired Cops.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 70 years, Betty Fewox Halman; daughters, Cindy Ann (Vernon) Pierce, Linda Elaine (David) White, and Susan Gail Halman; son, Johnny L. Halman Jr.; seven grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, George Clifton Halman Sr.

The family received friends on Dec. 7, 2021, at Hewell & Son Funeral Home in Jacksonville. Services were held at Hewell & Son on Wednesday, Dec. 8, 2021. Pastor Tim Maynard officiated. Interment immediately followed the service, at the Greenlawn Cemetery. Police Chaplain Clarence Jarrell officiated.
