The clock striking noon on Friday, July 5, signaled the end of a month-long registration period for Macon County’s four nonpartisan political offices up for re-election this November. But only one of those elections will have more than one name on the ballot.
The last uncontested race, the Macon County Soil and Water seat, had its incumbent file on Wednesday, July 3, as Mike Breedlove put pen to paper. Breedlove was the last Macon County filer. He will run unopposed for the seat he first won unopposed in 2020.
Two of the three Macon County Board of Education seats will be unopposed this November as they were in 2020. Hilary Wilkes will be the only name on the District 1 (Highlands) ballot while Melissa Evans will be the only name on the District 3 (Nantahala) ballot.
The District 4 (at-large) ballot will be a three-candidate race as it was in 2020 but with different challengers. Incumbent Jim Breedlove seeks to defend his seat against John deVille and Danny Reitmeier.
The nonpartisan candidates will join the partisan ones on the Tuesday, Nov. 5, ballot, which will feature the choices for U.S. President, U.S. House of Representatives, N.C. Governor, N.C. General Assembly and more.
Absentee ballots will be mailed Sept. 6 to eligible voters who requested a form. Oct. 11 is the deadline to register to vote. Early voting with same-day registration starts Oct. 17.
