Macon County residents will have a chance to show their support for local law enforcement at a Back the Blue walk and ceremony scheduled for Saturday, July 25.
Organized by sheriff Robert Holland, the event will support local law enforcement officers and their families.
The walk begins at noon from town hall to the gazebo, where the ceremony will be held.
“This is not a protest,” said sheriff Robert Holland, who organized the event. “I’ve had people in the community wanting to help us have a back the blue event. It’s an opportunity for people to come out and show love and support for law enforcement.”
Holland stressed that Back the Blue won’t be a political event, although scheduled speakers include U.S. House candidates Madison Cawthorn and Moe Davis. Others expected to attend include county commissioners, Rep. Kevin Corbin and Sen. Jim Davis.
The event will include an opening ceremony with three law enforcement officers singing the national anthem, followed by the posting of colors.
The event will also honor fallen officers, an annual ceremony that was cancelled because of COVID-19. There will also be a poster decorating contest for kids.
Attendees are asked to bring their own chairs, and face masks and safe social distancing are recommended, Holland said.
