The Macon County Board of Education approved the appointments of two new principals at the June 30 meeting.
Mark Sutton was named principal of Macon Middle School, where he had served as interim principal since April. Former principal Kevin Bailey was suspended with pay on April 8 and resigned effective June 30. The reason for the suspension remains confidential as a personnel issue.
Sutton has worked for Macon County Schools for 22 years including the past six years as principal of Macon Early College (MEC), six years as principal at Mountain View Intermediate and four years as assistant principal at Macon Middle School. He was named Principal of the Year for 2021-2022.
Sutton said he looks forward to getting to know the students and parents more in the coming school year and continuing to work with the dedicated faculty. “They’re an awesome bunch of teachers working hard, and they are passionate about what they do.”
The middle school has been undergoing renovations for more than a year, but Sutton expects those will be completed by the time school starts in August.
Brian Moffitt had been serving as interim principal at MEC since April and will now take on the role on a permanent basis. Moffitt was previously assistant principal at South Macon Elementary.
“I’m very excited about the opportunity,” Moffitt said following Thursday’s meeting.
Moffitt said in some ways MEC is still one of the county’s best kept secrets and he wants to do more to get students involved in the community and to recognize students’ achievements.
He said they are in the process of renovating some of the space at the school to make it more inviting for students.
Also, during Thursday’s meeting, as part of the approved updates to the MEC handbook, students will be required to complete 25 hours of community service each year. Moffitt said a variety of opportunities will be presented for students during and after school hours.
Moffitt said it’s important for students to learn about community involvement and he looks forward to working with local organizations to provide those opportunities for students.
“I want to give back as much as I possibly can to a community that gave me so much,” he said.

With Moffitt’s move to MEC, Angie Ledford will become assistant principal at South Macon.
The board also approved the following personnel changes during the meeting:
