The Macon County Sheriff’s Office found a dead child in a home and their mother is facing felonious murder charges.
Around 5:15 p.m. Sunday, the MCSO was dispatched to 22 Peaceful Valley Trail for a death investigation of a seven-year-old child.
“The child was found deceased in his home, and his mother was flown to a nearby hospital in critical condition,” MCSO stated.
On Monday, Oct. 7, MCSO said Yakeeva Latai Davis, 32, of Franklin had been arrested and charged with one count of felonious murder. Davis was issued no bond.
MCSO Major Jonathan Phillips confirmed that Davis is the mother of the deceased child. The felonious murder charge came after conversation with the District Attorney’s office, Phillips said, adding that the charge could change later after investigation or through a grand jury.
According to the warrant, it’s alleged that Davis “unlawfully, willfully and feloniously did of malice aforethought kill and murder.”
Phillips said they can’t release information about the scene or cause of death pending autopsy results and doesn’t anticipate anyone else being charged at this time.
Davis’ first appearance in a Macon County Courtroom took place Tuesday, Oct. 8.
Iotla Valley Elementary Principal Michelle Bell informed the school Monday that one of their own students had died and they would have counselors available to talk to students as needed, following the school system’s Crisis Response and Management plan.
