FRANKLIN - John Douglas “Doug” Thompson, 78, passed away Monday, Jan. 9, 2023, at his residence after a period of declining health.

Born in Macon County, he was the son of the late Jess R. and Ethel Buchanan Thompson. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia Ann Bryson Thompson; brothers, Jesse, Harold, Harry, Bill and George Thompson; sisters, Dolly Thompson and Elizabeth.

Doug was a member of Sugarfork Baptist Church. He was a former member of the Sugarfork building committee, cemetery committee, and former secretary/treasurer of the perpetual fund. He was also a former member of the board of directors for Cullasaja Gorge Fire and Rescue. Doug served a meal to most of Macon County during his years of food service and loved spending time with his family.

Doug is survived by his daughters, Kimberly Burnette (Brian) of Franklin and Heather Wallace (Gregg) of Franklin; grandchildren, Samuel Wallace, Logan Wallace and Wyatt Burnette; and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held Friday, Jan. 13, at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Macon Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m., one hour prior to service. Rev. Steve Reeves will officiate. Burial will be in the Sugarfork Baptist Church Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial can be made to WNC Hospice House Foundation, P.O. Box 815, Franklin, NC 28744.

Pallbearers will be Samuel Wallace, Logan Wallace, Wyatt Burnette, Josh Ward, Bill Allen and Jack Baird.  Honorary Pallbearers will be the Cullasaja Fire Department.
