Charles Blanton McClain
Charles Blanton McClain, 84, of Franklin, passed away May 5, 2016 at Mission Hospital in Asheville.
Charles was born in Saluda to the late Blanton Garnett McClain and Lila Mae Ward McClain Morgan on Jan. 20, 1932. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Polly Ann McGaha McClain, and his siblings, Marilyn Orr, Jack McClain and Bobby McClain.
Sgt. First Class McClain retired from the Army in 1975 as a recruiter in Independence, Kansas. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War and the Korean War and was awarded the Bronze Star. He served his country proudly and over his career lived in South Carolina, North Carolina, Texas, Florida, Montana, Kansas and Germany. He loved the mountains of North Carolina and enjoyed driving though the countryside the “old way.” Charles loved to fly fish, hunt pheasant, work in his yard, and he enjoyed washing and waxing his cars. He loved his children and grandchildren and would often share photos with friends and family.
He is survived by his daughter, Kay McClain Cunha and husband Jon, of Franklin; his son, Victor McClain and wife Laura of Natchitoches, Louisiana; five grandchildren, Kenny Dixon of Branson, Missouri, Krissy Anderson of Georgetown, Texas, Jon Cunha of Mesa, Arizona, Amanda McClain Kunec of Tomball, Texas and Keegan McClain of Lafayette, Louisiana; and seven great-grandchildren. A graveside service was held Sunday, May 8, at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Hendersonville. Rev. Sherrill Moore officiated. The family received friends Saturday, May 7 at Forest Lawn Funeral Home in Hendersonville.
