The Macon County Special Olympics was held Friday, April 10, at Macon Middle School. Competing in the events were athletes from Mountain View Intermediate, Macon Middle School, Franklin High School, Macon Citizens Habilities, South Macon Elementary, Iotla Valley Elementary and Highlands School
The theme for 2026 was “Brave in Every Way,” paying homage to the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
The event began with an opening ceremony including the parade of athletes. Athletes competed in a slate of sports like standing long jump, tennis and softball throw and races designed to accommodate athletes of all ages and ability levels.
Young athletes also had the chance to participate in children’s activities such as an obstacle course, knocking down traffic cones, bouncing balls on a parachute and more.
